The concert will feature a musical journey through diverse cultures and regions, with selections inspired by the American West, Europe, East Asia and the Middle East. Under the direction of Denisse Santos-Gooden, the Wind Symphony will open the program with Rossano Galante’s “Beyond the Horizon” and Kevin McKee’s “Under Western Skies,” featuring trumpet soloists Luke Mularczyk and Valeria Trevino. The first half will continue with Leroy Anderson’s “The Irish Washerwoman,” followed by Sonny Kompanek’s “Killer Tango” and Ron Nelson’s “Courtly Airs and Dances,” both performed by the Andrews Brass. The Jazz Ensemble will conclude the first half of the concert with Vernon Duke’s “April in Paris,” arranged by Rick Stitzel. Following intermission, the program will feature John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare,” arranged by James Curnow. The set will continue with Arturo Márquez’s “Danzon No. 2,” transcribed for wind symphony by Oliver Nickel, and John Barnes Chance’s “Variations on a Korean Folk Song.” Roland Barrett’s “Arabian Dances” will feature undergraduate student conductor Oscar Flores, before the concert concludes with John Philip Sousa’s patriotic march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” arranged by Keith Brion. Tickets are available at howard.andrews.edu. General admission tickets are $9.50, including fees. Students and seniors age 62 and older can purchase tickets for $6.50, including fees. Online student ticket purchases are limited to two per student ID.   Tue, 03 Nov 2026 16:07:14 +0000 Andrews Develops Student Research Center http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/70492 Andrews University has established the University Student Research Center (USRC), a yearlong program designed to help undergraduate and graduate students develop research skills and pursue scholarly opportunities. The 12-module program combines faculty-led instruction with hands-on support from experienced student research assistants. Participants learn to identify research problems, review scholarly literature, develop research questions, analyze data and communicate findings. The program aims to help students turn their interests into research projects and measurable academic and professional outcomes. According to Carlisle Sutton, sponsored research officer at Andrews, the center aims to help students build the skills and assurance needed to engage in research and open doors to future opportunities. “Studies have shown that undergraduate research is associated with increased student retention, a greater likelihood of pursuing graduate and professional education, and stronger preparation for research-related and professional career pathways. Students who are engaged in research also demonstrate improved critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration and time management. We want to be able to help our students so that every student who leaves Andrews University will be able to say with confidence that they can engage with research,” Sutton says. Each session includes approximately 40 minutes of faculty-led instruction followed by two hours of guided research support. The program is open to students across disciplines, regardless of previous research experience, and it complements existing opportunities such as the J.N. Andrews Honors program and Undergraduate Research Scholars program. Stacie Hatfield, associate professor of anthropology at Andrews, has worked with students conducting research through the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program for several years. “The USRC provides additional levels of support and mentorship for students engaged in research,” she says. “Support at the University level makes research opportunities and mentorship available to a broader segment of our student population.” Hatfield adds that research has value beyond academic achievement as well, allowing students to explore questions about the world and develop knowledge that can shape their professional and spiritual lives. She hopes students will gain experience in navigating academic research structures, analyzing information and making meaningful connections from data. Sutton cited results from the 2025 National Survey of Student Engagement showing that 44% of Andrews seniors reported research experience working with faculty, compared with 3% of freshmen. He hopes the center, in addition to the other incentives offered through the Office of Research & Creative Scholarship, will encourage earlier participation in research and increase the number of students engaged in research at Andrews. For Kamran Owusu-Frimpong, sophomore business management and leadership student, the center has helped him develop focused research topics and consider how certain issues affect others. He became involved after Sutton encouraged him to explore health care research. “The most valuable thing I have learned is how to research a topic, identify an area of interest, and narrow my focus to determine what specifically I should be looking for and how the topic is affecting others,” Owusu-Frimpong says. He believes the center gives students an opportunity to turn their ideas into meaningful academic work. “Through research, you can contribute positive and meaningful change to the area you are studying while also demonstrating humility and a willingness to learn,” Owusu-Frimpong shares. By the end of the academic year, USRC participants are expected to work toward tangible outcomes, such as completing a research project, presenting findings, preparing a manuscript for publication or pursuing a research-related internship. Students who attend at least 10 of the 12 sessions will receive a certificate of completion. Looking ahead, Sutton hopes to expand participation through additional cohorts and a possible summer research camp where students could work more extensively with faculty. The center also aims to connect students with external research internships and other scholarly opportunities. “We want you to learn the skills in the classroom. We want you to be able to understand how those skills impact the wider world,” Sutton says. Through the USRC, Andrews aims to help students move beyond learning about research to developing the confidence and skills to contribute to it. Klingbeil, DLitt, as its new rector during a formal ceremony held in the Friedensau Chapel. The University Senate had elected Klingbeil in Feb. 2026, with subsequent confirmation by the Board of Trustees. The leadership transition officially took effect on Oct. 1, 2026, marking the commencement of the 2026–2027 academic year. Klingbeil succeeds Professor Roland E. Fischer, PhD, who completed a ten-year tenure following the conclusion of his second regular term on Sept. 30, 2026. A recording of the official handover ceremony is accessible via YouTube. ... Born in Berlin in 1964, Klingbeil completed his theological studies in Austria, South Africa, and the United States, culminating in a Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Stellenbosch. His academic career includes appointments as professor of Old Testament at both the Universidad Peruana Unión in Peru and the Universidad Adventista del Plata in Argentina, followed by his role as dean of the Theological Seminary at the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies in the Philippines. From 2009 onward, he served as associate editor of the international publications Adventist Review and Adventist World while holding a professorship in Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. In 2023, he returned to Germany to assume the position of Chief Financial Officer of the Hanseatic Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. His scholarly portfolio encompasses extensive international publications, research institute memberships, and academic advisory board roles. A private burial will be held in Mountain Grove, Missouri. Rosalyn was born on April 18, 1930, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Donald J. and Esther E. (Bullis) Reeder. She graduated as valedictorian from Forest Lake High School in Minnesota in 1947. As a senior, she was crowned Forest Lake's Fire Queen and official representative at the St. Paul Winter Carnival. She graduated with a BA in psychology from the University of Minnesota, and an MA in educational psychology and child development from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI. Rosalyn loved to sing and was recognized with numerous awards for her exceptional talent. She sang with the St. Paul Civic Opera from 1961–1968. She went on to teach sociology and psychology at Western Michigan University, Andrews University and Lake Michigan College. Her interest in studies was in linguistics and ancient feminine history, a passion that led her to travel extensively around the world. Drawing from years of research, she authored several books and articles and published her first book in 1999. Snyder was born and raised in the Berrien Springs area, having been born at the old Berrien General Hospital and growing up on a 67-acre fruit farm on Hinchman Road in Oronoko Township. She works at Berrien RESA where she is the student talent consultant. Snyder said she wears two hats at Berrien RESA, serving as both the student activities coordinator and the Math & Science Center consultant. “One part of my role involves coordinating student events across Berrien County, including the Cloverleaf Spelling Contest, the Science Olympiad, and Community Student Art Exhibitions, among other events,” she said. “My primary responsibility, however, is serving as the program coordinator for the Berrien RESA Math & Science Center, located on the campus of Andrews University,” she added. The Math & Science Center is a half-day STEM program serving high school students from Berrien and Cass counties. Students spend half of their school day taking classes taught by Andrews University instructors in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related courses.
