Interpretative Issues of the Apocalypse and Its Reception in Antiquity and Late Antiquity” at the University of Zurich.</p> <p> Having studied the Book of Revelation, apocalyptic literature, the New Testament and early Christianity, Kuryliak has comprehensive experience in theological and philosophical research and has over 10 published articles in peer-reviewed journals. His dissertation focuses on biblical hermeneutics—the study and methodology of interpreting biblical texts—concerning the book of Revelation as an apocalyptic text.</p> <p> The four major hermeneutical approaches mentioned in the dissertation title have been utilized throughout history to varying degrees and combinations. The approach of preterism views the apocalyptic events of Revelation as having happened at the time of its writing during the first century. In contrast, an idealist approach emphasizes the struggle between good and evil, portraying the Apocalypse as a symbolic event from which individuals can take practical implications. Historicism views the events of Revelation as a prophetic account of the happenings in church history between its writing and the second coming of Jesus Christ. Lastly, a futurist approach views Revelation as a prophecy of events at the end of Earth’s history.</p> <p> Kuryliak explores the critical involvement of each approach in shaping the early church’s interpretations of Revelation from the second to seventh centuries. “To some extent, all early Christians combined preterist, idealist, historicist, and futurist perspectives. Although commentators used different combinations of hermeneutical approaches, none denied the prophetic nature of the Apocalypse and its connection to history. The findings of the study highlight not only the enduring relevance of Revelation’s symbols in various contexts, but also the role of exegetical diversity in reflecting the book’s profound theological dimensions,” he explains.</p> <p> Kuryliak’s recent completion of doctoral studies in theology at the University of Zurich follows an extensive educational background, including a Bachelor of Theology from the Ukrainian Adventist Theological Institute, a Bachelor of Philosophy in religious studies from the Ukrainian Institute of Arts and Sciences, a Master of Religious Studies from the National University of Ostroh Academy, and a Master of Arts in religion and post-graduate certificate in Ellen G. White and Adventist studies from Andrews University. While pursuing his PhD, he also spent time at Aarhus University in Aarhus, Denmark, and the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, as a visiting scholar. </p> Thu, 17 Jul 2025 11:07:25 +0000 Andrews Welcomes Chaplain Jonathan Fetrick http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/67497 <p> After a thoughtful search process, Andrews University welcomes new University Chaplain Jonathan Fetrick to the Center for Faith Engagement team. He will begin his new position when he arrives on campus at the end of July.</p> <p> Fetrick served for the past eight years as pastor of the Wisconsin Academy Church, where he focused on mentoring young people into spiritual leaders. Prior to that, he served for 11 years in the Washington Conference, both as a pastor and youth pastor. There, he helped cultivate vibrant spiritual communities, prepared young adults for church leadership and saw youth engagement triple within a three-year span. His experience in leading large-scale mission trips reflects his heart for service and the global mission of the church.</p> <p> An Andrews alumnus, Fetrick holds a Master of Divinity and is currently completing a Doctor of Ministry degree, focusing on discipleship strategies in collegiate settings. He also obtained a bachelor’s degree in theology, with minors in biblical languages, preaching and history, from Southern Adventist University. His vision for chaplaincy is one of collaboration—coming alongside students, faculty and staff to equip them as faithful disciples who disciple others.</p> <p> In his new role, Fetrick will be responsible for enriching the spiritual life, faith development and pastoral care of the University community. Collaborating with a dedicated team of spiritual leaders, he will work to build a vibrant community of faith, foster whole-person growth and further the mission of Andrews University.</p> <p> Fetrick and his wife Michelle, also an Andrews alum, are excited to return to the campus where their journey together began, along with their four children. Gary Burdick, professor of physics and dean of Research, notes, “While we have long led in training Adventist students for advanced study of science and mathematics, we have noticed a significant uptick in those accepted into fully-funded doctoral programs, even as these programs are becoming more competitive.” He credits the students’ successful placement to the unique research culture at the University.</p> <p> All Andrews STEM faculty are research active, with several receiving external funding for their projects. For instance, Jay Johnson, professor of engineering and physics, has had research funded by several grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), while Anthony Bosman, chair of the Department of Mathematics, has led several NSF-funded undergraduate research experiences.</p> <p> Faculty members intentionally engage students in their research programs, leading to publications and presentations at national and international conferences. These experiences help the students prepare for and stand out when applying to the nation's top graduate programs. Moreover, as a faith-based university, Andrews is committed to preparing graduates who approach their scientific study with the distinctive purpose of glorifying God as Creator and serving humanity.</p> <p> One such student, Ian Neidigh, graduated in May 2025 and will be starting his PhD in chemistry at Yale University in the fall. Neidigh follows alumna Hannah Castillo, who is currently finishing her PhD in chemistry at Yale, having graduated from Andrews in 2022. David Randall, chair of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, expresses, “We are grateful to see students from our American Chemical Society-accredited program excel at the highest levels and continue our legacy of preparing scientific researchers, leaders in industry and future faculty for Adventist higher education.”</p> <p> Additionally in recent years, alumnus Sam Clough graduated with undergraduate degrees in engineering and computer science in May 2024 and was accepted to the electrical engineering PhD program at Notre Dame University. Also at Notre Dame, Eric Inae, a 2022 graduate, is pursuing a PhD in computer science.</p> <p> Noah Koliadko and Wesley Martin started their PhD programs in physics at Duke University and the University of Colorado Boulder in 2024, following their graduation from Andrews. Both students benefited from participating in heliophysics research projects funded by NASA and NSF under the guidance of Johnson. “While undergraduates, Wesley and Noah were already doing work at the level of graduate students and gave impressive talks at international conferences and specialized NASA working groups and were able to network with teams of scientists specializing in space physics,” Johnson notes. Another student from the class of 2025, Yoel Kim, will also be starting a doctoral program in physics at The Ohio State University this fall.</p> <p> Recent graduate Jamie Shepard will begin a PhD in mathematics at the University of Tennessee this fall. Additionally, in 2024, alumni Alex Navarro and Moises Reyes Rivas began PhD programs in mathematics at the University of Maryland and the University of California, Los Angeles, respectively. The year prior, Noe Reyes Rivas started his PhD in applied mathematics at Brown University.</p> <p> Shepard, Navarro, and Moises and Noe Reyes Rivas all participated in undergraduate research experiences through the mathematics department. In doing so, they were able to present their findings at several conferences, including the Joint Mathematics Meetings, the largest annual meeting of mathematicians in the world. Noe Reyes Rivas reflects, “Thanks to Andrews’ holistic education, strong spiritual foundation, and the support of my professors, I have excelled in my field.”</p> <p> Yosia Nurhan and Jonathan Homan, who both graduated with dual degrees in mathematics and physics, also benefited from research at Andrews, working on NASA-funded projects that allowed them to publish original research on space physics while they were still undergraduates. They are now pursuing PhDs in applied mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Colorado Boulder, respectively, and continue to collaborate with Johnson on research. Several other alumni are also completing doctorates in the mathematical sciences, including Christiane and Dorothea Gallos (mathematics, Indiana University Bloomington), Lucinda Ford (mathematics education, Texas State University) and Mykhaylo Malakhov (biostatistics, University of Minnesota).</p> <p> In addition to these student successes, nearly 100 Andrews undergraduates have been accepted to medical school over the past five years, with an acceptance rate 10% higher than the national average. These students benefited from research experiences with Andrews faculty in molecular and cellular biology, physiology, and ecology. Moreover, several Andrews alumni have placed in highly competitive veterinary programs. Graduates Karyl Beal and Carolina Smith earned their bachelor’s degrees in animal science from Andrews in 2024 and have been accepted to doctoral programs in veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois and the University of Tennessee, respectively. Additionally, recent graduate Jessica Dibble is beginning her doctoral studies at the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine this fall.</p> <p> Many of these students conducted their undergraduate research experiences as part of the J.N. Andrews Honors Program, which culminates in a capstone research project. In carrying out these projects, students “apply their critical thinking and analytical skills to research questions in their majors, developing well-conceived investigative methodologies and strengthening their ability to communicate precise scientific discoveries to an interdisciplinary audience,” explains L. As part of his national campaign, Senior Strides, du Preez is traveling to all 50 U.S. states in 50 days, completing 50 kilometers (31.07 miles) each day to raise awareness about senior health.</p> <p> On Friday, June 20, day 37 of his journey, du Preez returned to the campus of Andrews University, where he earned four graduate degrees between 1978 and 1993. “It’s full circle,” he says. “I began my fitness journey here at Andrews where I began swimming in the pool, running my first 10-mile race and working as an editor for the student paper. Being back here brings it all together.”</p> <p> Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, du Preez moved to the U.S. in 1976 to begin his studies at Andrews. Over the next two decades, he completed a Master of Arts in religion, a Master of Arts in education, a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry. He currently serves as a pastor in Beaumont, California.</p> <p> It's du Preez’s commitment to promoting healthy aging that ultimately drives his mission. According to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr215.pdf">recent health studies</a>, fewer than 15% of Americans aged 65 and older engage in the recommended amount of aerobic and muscle strengthening activities. Acknowledging the 50 million older adults in the United States who don’t meet these fitness benchmarks, du Preez says he hopes to be a source of motivation. “My goal is to energize, empower and encourage others. Especially those over 65, to live vibrantly and healthfully,” he shares.</p> <p> Du Preez began his journey on May 15, 2025, in Honolulu, Hawaii, followed by a trip to Alaska the next day. Since then, he and his support team—including a driver, cook and media coordinator—have traveled across the United States. Each day involves completing 50 kilometers by walking and/or cycling, attending media interviews and visiting senior centers. At each center, du Preez delivers motivational presentations and distributes literature about the importance of wellness and healthy living.</p> <p> Although his original plan involved walking all 50 kilometers daily, the demands of travel, public engagement and logistical constraints led to a shift. “To visit with seniors and get to the next state on time, biking became the practical choice,” du Preez says.</p> <p> Throughout his journey, du Preez’s core message has remained consistent: Begin with manageable steps, maintain a steady routine and find enjoyment in movement. “People often say, ‘You’re doing 50K, I could never do that,’” he explains. “But I tell them, just walk around the block. Find something you enjoy. And don’t aim for perfection, aim for regularity.”</p> <p> Despite the physical toll, including recurring blisters, sore muscles and a recent cold, du Preez has not missed a single day. “I’m still out here doing 50K a day because the mission matters,” he states.</p> <p> Looking ahead, du Preez is already setting new personal goals. He hopes to participate in the 100th Comrades Marathon, a 56-mile ultramarathon in South Africa, when he turns 75. This year, in 2025, graduate student Herimamy Rafaliniony won the Best Research Paper and Poster Award. In 2024, Jerry Chi, professor of management, graduate program director and associate dean in the College of Professions, and Grace Chi, professor of nursing, won the Best Research Paper North America Management Society (NAMS) Award.</div> <div>  </div> <div> MBAA International holds their annual conference in Chicago, where over 6,000 international business professionals gather to share research and provide networking opportunities. This year, two professors from Andrews accepted the invitation to attend: Williams Peprah, associate professor of finance, and Jerry Chi. Chi’s 2024 Best Research Paper Award, won along with his wife, Grace, was for their study “Impacts of Servant Leadership on Burnout Level of Nursing Staff: A Structural Equation Model.”</div> <div>  </div> <div> This year, 15 research papers from Jerry Chi’s graduate-level business research class were accepted for podium presentation at the MBAA International Conference. One of Chi’s students, Herimamy Rafaliniony, was awarded for his paper, “A Multivariate Analysis of the Impact of COVID-19 on the Consumer Price Index by Category in Selected Major Developed Countries,” co-authored with Chi and Peprah. The study incorporated multivariate analysis and longitudinal studies to analyze the consumer price index and other economic performance indicators of developed countries after the COVID-19 pandemic.</div> <div>  </div> <div> Participation in international conferences such as MBAA International has enriched the student experience at Andrews University, diversifying student portfolios, enhancing qualifications for PhD programs, and providing proof of experience in data analysis and research. “This research tool with data analysis capabilities gives the students the fishing pole (job obtaining capabilities) instead of a fish (an internship),” says Chi.</div> <div>  </div> <div> Within Chi’s business research class, the primary area of study is campus environment data, often using structural equation modeling, multiple regression, variance analysis with MNOVA/ANOVA, EFA, CFA and scale development. Secondary research concerns include big data with logistic regression and multivariate analysis. Chi emphasizes creativity and feasibility within class projects in order to cover 20 research models effectively, with topics in fields such as behavioral science, management, economics, human resource management, leadership, management information systems, operation, marketing and finance.</div> <div>  </div> <div> “A challenge in teaching research classes is making sure students understand the models first and guide them to use critical thinking logically in their creative application,” Chi explains. “I am pleased that my MBA and MSA students are so intelligent and diligent to follow my guidance to complete their papers in a timely manner for submission.”</div> Mon, 23 Jun 2025 16:27:44 +0000 Andrews Alumni Honored as "Legends of Michiana" http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/67377 <p> Loren and Lowell Hamel were recently honored with a documentary broadcast highlighting the decades they have spent promoting health for the Berrien County community through the Corewell Health system. The documentary was produced by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and was broadcast by the local PBS Michiana WNIT channel for its “Legends of Michiana” documentary series. The hour-long documentary aired on May 29 and June 1, 2025. As long-time members of the Berrien Springs and Andrews University communities, the twin brothers have blessed countless people in southwest Michigan by modeling their ministries of health care after the servant leadership Jesus demonstrated in the Gospels.</p> <p> Loren and Lowell are the fourth and fifth children of Paul and Beatrice Hamel, who contributed to the Berrien community through a successful instrument business. Paul Hamel also served as the chair of the Andrews University Department of Music for several years. His leadership was honored through the naming of the campus building Hamel Hall.</p> <p> Both brothers shared similar interests growing up and worked many of the same jobs together as teenagers, including at the Andrews Grounds Department. They were high achievers in their academic careers, earning their high school diplomas at Andrews Academy, their bachelor’s degrees in biology at Andrews University and finishing medical school at Loma Linda University in three years instead of the usual four.</p> <p> Lowell briefly served in the United States Air Force while Loren interned in Chicago, Illinois, before both eventually became practicing medical doctors. Despite having the pick of several jobs, they decided it was important to return to and care for the southwest Michigan community.</p> <p> Both began working as physicians at the then-named Lakeland Healthcare system, which would later merge with Spectrum Health to form Corewell Health. After serving in various vice president roles within Lakeland Healthcare, Loren was asked to become president of the organization, and Lowell took on his previous administrative role. Throughout their tenure, they focused on caring for and benefiting the community while trying to lower costs for patients as much as possible.</p> <p> Colleagues experienced Christ-like care and compassion from both brothers. One former employee shared in the documentary that Lowell once gave her all of the salary he accrued from paid time off to pay for the funeral services for her mother. A highlight of Loren’s tenure as Lakeland Healthcare’s president was his “Bring Your Heart to Work” campaign, which inspired an attitude and culture of kindness within the organization and translated into more compassionate care for patients.</p> <p> “Both Lowell and I view leadership as ‘how can I make things better for others,’” said Loren during the documentary. Inspiration from God, along with friendly brotherly competition, helped shape their vision for the future.</p> <p> Throughout the documentary, many colleagues, employees and family members affirmed how the Hamels have impacted their community. This was reflected during a sobering point of the film, which discussed Lowell’s serious bout with COVID-19.</p> <p> Former Pioneer Memorial Church Pastor Dwight Nelson recalled during the film that the concern and support from the Berrien community were immense. “The community was united because it was focused on someone who lived in our midst, who has given of himself,” said Nelson. “That unifying prayer for saving the life of Dr. Lowell—I have never seen this community pray over anything more than they did for that prayer request.”</p> <p> Since Lowell’s recovery, the Hamel family noted they have been tremendously blessed by the support of the Andrews and regional communities, and they have continued to see God richly bless them. Three generations of Hamels currently live in Berrien County. Although both are retired now, Loren and Lowell continue their friendly brotherly competition through a shared love of woodwork and John Deere equipment.</p> <p> The ultimate legacy of the Hamel brothers is the way they have always put their community first, best explained by Lowell’s final statements in the documentary: “If each day you try to make the right decisions, and if each day you are honorable and faithful to the people you serve and the profession, I think that creates a legacy,” he explained. “A legend doesn’t mean famous. A legend, for me, means that people know you’re dedicated to what you’re doing. These instruments will be housed in either Hamel Hall or the Howard Performing Arts Center and will be used by various music students, faculty members and performers.</p> <p> Most recently, a Kawai Grand Piano was donated by the Fairplain Presbyterian Church, which was previously located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The donation was given in honor of Vladimir Slavujevic, an Andrews alumnus and the long-time music director of the church. Slavujevic is a professional musician who has contributed to Seventh-day Adventist churches across Europe and the United States. He has performed concerts for the Lake Union Conference along with his wife, daughters and sister. Slavujevic’s musical contributions have also been broadcast on the Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN) and the Hope Channel.</p> <p> A Klop Continuo Organ was donated by the Rhoads family on behalf of the late Donald Rhoads, former chair of the University’s Department of Mathematics. Rhoads attended Andrews when it was previously Emmanuel Missionary College (EMC). His primary focus of study was mathematics. While in school, he met his wife, Jean Schlunt, and they both graduated from EMC in 1958. Rhoads returned to Andrews University as a professor of mathematics for a total of 18 years, spending six as the department chair. Rhoads passed away on Dec. 16, 2023, and the organ donation was orchestrated by his surviving relatives this year. The organ has already been put to good use, as it was a part of a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/1j28pypehp0?t=1053s">concert</a> performed by the Andrews University Singers and Chorale on April 5, 2025.</p> <p> A Steinway Grand Piano was also donated in 2023 in memory of Phyllis Staples, a talented pianist and long-time resident of Berrien Springs, Michigan. Prior to her death in 2019, Staples served as a volunteer greeter at the Howard Performing Arts Center.</p> <p> In addition to the gift of physical instruments, the Department of Music has also received numerous monetary donations toward its Steinway fund, which raises money for additional Steinway-branded pianos used for educational and performance purposes.</p> <p> Max Keller, chair of the Department of Music, shares that the department is very grateful for the contributions it has received, noting, “We have all of our rooms and all of our spaces filled now, which is fantastic!” He affirms the high quality of the donations, noting that they will be used primarily by students within the department.</p> <p> Carlos Lugo, a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in music performance, has found the recent donations helpful for his learning experience. He shares that he has used the Kawai Grand Piano in Hamel Hall to practice, and he finds it comfortable with a “refreshing sound,” perfect for practice and performance.</p> <p> “Sometimes arts are disregarded by other budget priorities,” says Lugo. “Investing in the arts is investing in our soul. Donors should know that what they do is so beneficial for us, music students. They are investing in our talents so that we can succeed and change the world.”</p> <p> Senior Aiko Ayala, whose bachelor’s degree in music performance is concentrated in piano, expresses “great joy” in being able to use the quality donations.</p> <p> “Knowing that people care about my education makes me feel more confident in pursuing my goals as a musician and servant of God,” she says. “It also motivates me to try new things without worrying too much about limitations of instruments [or] finances. Therefore, donations are vital and appreciated for music students like me, who like to go beyond and above the standards, so that we can change the world one note at a time.”</p> <p> Future music projects include the completion of the Howard Performing Arts Center, which opened in 2003. The ceremony, which took place on May 5, 2025, honored the best work of communicators in the Christian community throughout the previous year.</p> <p> “Many different media organizations came together from different denominations and from different places around the country,” Nicholas reflects. “This award is meaningful to me because I’ve been able to work a lot in journalism since I was 16, and now to be highlighted for some of my work is a blessing.”</p> <p> Nicholas grew up in Benton Harbor, Michigan, with the habit of watching the news and picking up newspapers and magazines. “I really didn’t think of myself as a good writer growing up,” he admits. His perspective began to change when, during his sophomore year, his high school went online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While at home, Nicholas decided to create a YouTube channel titled “Nick Eats,” highlighting local businesses in Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.</p> <p> “After I had been making videos for some time, the city manager of Benton Harbor at the time told me that I should think about becoming a writer,” Nicholas shares. Inspired, he arranged a meeting with the publisher of the Benton-Michiana Spirit Community Newspaper and began writing a column titled “Nick’s Community Beat.” After just two years on the job, he became a junior editor for the paper.</p> <p> “What I like most about journalism is that I’m able to make new friends and connect with new people just about every day,” he says. “My stand-out moments are when I’m able to highlight a person or an organization that is working to make our world a better place.”</p> <p> In 2022, Nicholas was named to Moody on the Market’s 40 under 40 for his contributions to the Michiana area. At 18, he was the youngest recipient to receive the honor at that time. The same year, he was named the Blossomtime Festival’s Mr. Benton Harbor.</p> <p> His community involvement didn’t stop there. Nicholas began serving as a firefighter for the St. Joseph Charter Township Station No. 2 and was appointed by Michigan’s secretary of state to serve as a member of the Collegiate Advisory Task Force for the state of Michigan. He also joined the boards of several community organizations, including the Benton Harbor Arts Association, Corewell Health South’s Community Advocate Committee, Fresh Start Children’s Garden, Benton Harbor Girls Academy, and Nextgen Young Black Professionals of West Michigan.</p> <p> Nicholas also began studying at Andrews University in 2022. He quickly became involved in the University community, serving as a Bible study teacher at Pioneer Memorial Church, radio host at WAUS 90.7, writer for the Office of University Communication, and member of the Community Engagement Committee and Unified Civic Monuments Curriculum Council. For his leadership and dedication to community service, he was awarded a full-tuition scholarship his freshman year.</p> <p> “I’ve had a great time here at Andrews University. It has greatly shaped my experience in news and journalism,” he says. “I’ve been able to learn so much about how to become a communicator. Being a student here has opened so many doors of opportunity for me.”</p> <p> Beyond building his technical skills, Nicholas has also felt his faith flourish at Andrews. “It has helped me grow more as a man of God,” he shares. “I’m truly blessed and grateful for all of my many opportunities. I’m often reminded of James 4:10, where it says, ‘Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.’ My journey has definitely been a testament to that truth.”</p> <p> While pursuing his education, Nicholas has continued to work in and give back to his community. In addition to regular journalistic contributions to local publications Moody on the Market and the Lake Union Herald, he is the communications coordinator for the City of Benton Harbor, the Benton Harbor Community Development Corporation, Present Pillars, and other local businesses and nonprofits. In 2023, he received the Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Award from Lake Michigan College for exemplifying unity and leadership in his community, and in 2024, he was given the Student of the Year Award from the Society of Adventist Communicators for his outstanding leadership and excellence in journalism.</p> <p> Most recently, Nicholas applied for the Ed Bradley Journalism Fellowship at New York University. The fellowship, which seeks to address the underrepresentation of African-American males in newsrooms, brings together a cohort of Black college journalists to receive hands-on training in reporting, news writing and multimedia journalism. Attendees will have the opportunity to build industry contacts and learn from New York’s most prestigious newsrooms, including the New York Times, CNN and CBS News,</p> <p> “Seeing that students were accepted from big-name schools and seeing that big-name news outlets would be involved, I thought there was no chance I would get in,” Nicholas says. Despite this, he knew that he would regret it if he didn’t try, noting, “Even though I may be from a smaller town and smaller university, I decided to take the leap of faith.” In April, he received the news that he was accepted to the 2025 cohort.</p> <p> “I feel that this fellowship will teach me a lot and open a lot of opportunities for me,” Nicholas reflects. “I’m looking forward to meeting the other young men who will be joining me on this journey.
